Welcome to Poetry

I wrote the first group of poems during a six-month period in 1970 when our family was living in Uganda.

 Judith Vander Poems - Africa

The second group of poems has no central location, no Africa, which motivated my thoughts and poems. They express thoughts and feelings drawn from the everyday experience of life.

Emily Hill and her invalided sister, Dorothy Tappay, taught me Shoshone Ghost Dance songs and the religious meaning of Ghost Dance performance. The following is a quotation from my book, Shoshone Ghost Dance Religion, which first quotes the fieldnote entry for what prompted me to write a poem about these two women, Shoshone Sisters
